Melissa Marts, chief programs officer for Care and Share Food Bank of Southern Colorado, welcomes the public to an equinox barbecue, featuring Callicrate Beef burgers for purchase, and free screening of What’s Organic about Organic? 6 pm, Friday, Sept. 23.

One of many special activities planned in conjunction with Peak to Plains Local Food Week, the film explores food labeling and how to “eat with an ecological consciousness.” An issues briefing and discussion will follow.

The movie was chosen, at least in part, because it offers clear directives on what consumers can do to make a positive difference for their health and the environment, Melissa says.

While at Care and Share Warehouse, 2605 Preamble Point, guests will have a chance to visit the on-site gardens and fruit trees as well as the new solar-thermal greenhouse installed early this spring with a grant from the Colorado Garden and Home Show. Care and Share is pioneering a shift in the hunger relief system toward the distribution of more local food — grown on-site or purchased directly from area farmers or farm cooperatives — with an emphasis on freshness and nutrition. The next step is distributing increasing amounts of sustainability produced food, Melissa says.
